Description: This summary presents the central points of a report by Soviet Minister of Defense Sergei Sokolov on the results and consequences of the US-Soviet disarmament summit in Reykjavik in 1986. Sokolov's report was delivered at the 19th session of the Warsaw Pact's (WP) Committee of Ministers of Defense (CMD) in Warsaw 1986. Sokolov reviews the Soviet proposals in Reykjavik, the results of the summit, and related conclusions. He emphasizes the dangers of the US Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) program and the militarization of space. In a second part, Sokolov discusses several WP measures to strengthen its military potential under the present circumstances.
