Note on two Conversations with the President of the Indian National Congress (Reddy)

8 Jun 1977
Description: This report by the GDR Embassy in India contains two memoranda of conversation between embassy officials and and the newly-elected president of the Indian National Congress, Kasu Brahmananda Reddy. The talks concentrate on post-Emergency developments in the political landscape of India. Given the heterogeneous nature of the ruling Janata Party, Reddy predicts a comeback of the Congress despite its internal fragmentation. Reddy's comments during the second reported conversation foreshadow the imminent split of the Congress into pro- and and anti-Indira factions.
