Statement by the CMD on the First Agenda Item

Dec 1988
Description: This is a statement issued at the 23rd meeting of the Warsaw Pact's (WP) Committee of Ministers of Defense (CMD) in Sofia in 1988 regarding the publication of statistical details on the respective force levels and military capabilities of NATO and the WP. The CMD stresses the importance of publishing this data and believes that NATO and the WP are nearly equally strong. It is conceded that a number of asymmetries exist; however, the general assessment is one of overall parity. The CMD calls for measures to reduce such asymmetries as well as the number of offensive weapons and the overall size of the armed forces.
