Report of Colonel-General István Bata, Hungarian Minister of Defense, to the HWP Central Committee on the Command Staff Exercise

17 Jul 1956
Description: In this report to the Central Committee of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party (HSWP), Defense Minister István Bata provides information on the bilateral, command staff exercise held under the command of Soviet Marshall Rodion Malinovskii between 21 June and 10 July 1956. Taking part in the exercise were Hungarian, Soviet, and Romanian combined-service and air force staff. The goal was to develop further cooperation among Warsaw Pact armies, to practice advanced methods of operational conduct (taking into consideration the use of weapons of mass destruction), and to study the organization and battle procedures of the likely enemy.
