Memorandum of a Conversation with a Representative of the Communist Party of India

28 Mar 1979
Description: The GDR embassy in India reports on a meeting with H.K. Vyas, a member of the Communist Party of India’s Central Executive Committee. Vyas reports on the inadequate execution of the resolutions of the 11th Congress of the CPI of the previous year. The main objectives, the formation of a popular front of leftist and democratic political forces as well as opposition to the rising threat of Hindu nationalism, has not been achieved mainly due to the enmity of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the competition with Indira Gandhi’s Congress Party (I). Vyas describes the appeal of Indira Gandhi’s populism to the masses as one of the factors responsible for the current weakness of the CPI. Fearing domination by the Congress (I), the leadership of the CPI therefore decided against closer cooperation with Indira Gandhi.
